Upgrades That Will Help Protect Your Roof

A damaged roof can quickly lead to water damage to the rest of your home. Plus, replacing a roof can be pretty expensive. When you consider these two points, you start to realize just how important it is to take care of your roof. Sometimes, that means making some upgrades and updates to your home. Here are three such home updates that will help minimize roof damage so your roof stays in great shape and lasts for years to come.

Replace or Update Your Gutters

Gutters are placed along the edge of your roof. They are meant to catch the water that runs off the roof and shuttle that water down to the ground. They typically empty a few feet from the base of your home. If your gutters are clogged, leaky, or otherwise damaged, they may not be doing their job well. They might encourage water to sit on your roof longer than it should, or they may accumulate ice in the winter, which accelerates roof damage. Replacing old gutters will help protect your roof. You may also want to have gutter guards put on your new gutters, which will help prevent them from becoming clogged with leaves.

Add More Roof Vents

Roof vents are basically holes in the roof that allow air to escape from the attic. They are placed in areas where water can't get in them, or they are protected by overhangs to keep water out. A lot of roofs are designed with less ventilation than they really need. A lack of ventilation means the attic gets warmer than it should and all of that heat passes through the roof, causing damage along the way. A roofer can add a few more vents under the eaves of your roof. Ultimately, these will protect your roof and extend its lifespan.

Seal Your Skylights

This tip only applies if you have skylights. They can easily start leaking, which will damage all the roof material around them. It is therefore a good idea to have either a roofer or a window company come out and re-seal the area around your skylights. They can use a heavy-duty caulk or adhesive to do this. They may even need to install some new metal edging to prevent leaks around the skylight.

The upgrades above are all ones that can help protect your roof. Talk to a roofing service in your area to learn more about these and other measures for roof protection.
